Innovating Med Tech in Manitoba: Taumedis and UM Engineering
Taumedis announces a new agreement with University of Manitoba (UM) researchers in the Price Faculty of Engineering to develop Dual-Mode Imaging technology aimed at improving the evaluation of breast tissue, with a focus on addressing challenges in early breast cancer detection.
“By combining Taumedis’ innovation in medical imaging with the University’s research excellence, we aim to advance imaging technologies and support future improvements in clinical assessment, with the goal of ultimately improving patient outcomes.”
—Henry Floreal, Co-Founder and CEO of Taumedis
The project—which combines complementary imaging modalities using non-ionizing imaging methods—involves UM’s Electromagnetic Imaging Laboratory (EIL). A First-in-Human study is planned for 2026, pending regulatory and ethics approvals.
Beyond advancing early-stage imaging research, this agreement will support Manitoba’s innovation economy by reinforcing local capabilities in medical technology development, building high-value technical expertise, and contributing to the province’s broader strategy to grow a competitive, knowledge-based economy. Mike Lang, Taumedis Co-Founder and CTO, spoke to the value of bridging academia and industry on the UM Science Lens podcast earlier this year; recognizing a decline in local research opportunities since his time as a student at UM he noted:
“I’d like to create opportunities for students to start working on interesting projects early on in their academic career and hopefully seeing a path towards commercializing those products or projects. Having an idea of where those might go in an industrial or commercial setting.”
—Mike Lang, Co-Founder and CTO of Taumedis
